The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is an innovative synthesis of two distinct temperature stages: a high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 and a low-temperature stage harnessing CO2. In this system, the high-temperature stage employs NH3 as a refrigerant, which evaporates to condense the lower temperature CO2 refrigerant gas. A condenser-evaporator unites these stages, serving dual purposes as the condenser for the low temperature and the evaporator for the high temperature, ensuring seamless temperature transition.
Heat transfer within this system is an art form—first, the heat load is captured by the CO2 refrigerant through the end evaporator. This heat is deftly transferred to the NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator, after which it is gracefully released to the environment through a high-temperature condenser. The journey continues as CO2 moves from the condensing evaporator to the CO2 reservoir and navigates through a dryer filter and throttle valve to reach the gas-liquid separator. Driven by the CO2 circulation pump, liquid CO2 journeys to the evaporator, returning as a two-phase flow to the separator. The majestic cycle resumes as gaseous CO2 is eagerly drawn into the compressor, repeating the back-and-forth ballet of efficient cooling.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, high and low temperatures boast their own dedicated single refrigerant systems. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors traditional setups, complete with a refrigeration compressor, condenser, storage, separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system elevates itself with a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, marking a sophisticated dual-system setup.

It acts as a reservoir during downtime, adeptly storing CO2 liquid in the system. To counteract pressure hikes post-shutdown, an auxiliary evaporator sits atop the separator. The system's condensing evaporator uniquely functions as an NH3-side evaporator and CO2-side condenser, where compound liquids evaporate, and CO2 gas gracefully transitions into its liquid form.
