1. NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System Principle
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously designed with two distinct stages: a high temperature stage utilizing NH3 as the refrigerant, and a low temperature stage employing CO2. In this system, NH3 evaporates in the high-temperature section to effectively condense CO2 gas released from the low-temperature section. The stages are seamlessly connected through a condensation evaporator, which functions dually as the condenser for the low temperature stage and the evaporator for the high temperature stage.
Harnessing the power of thermodynamics, the heat load is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. This absorbed heat is then passed to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. Subsequently, the NH3 refrigerant releases this energy into the environment through a high-temperature condenser and cooling medium. Meanwhile, condensed CO2 travels from the condensing evaporator to the CO2 reservoir, further proceeding to the CO2 gas-liquid separator through a dryer filter and throttle valve. The cycle continues as liquid CO2 is propelled to the CO2 evaporator by the CO2 circulation pump, sans any end cooling device. Following evaporation, two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, and the gaseous CO2 is drawn by the compressor and compressed in the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the cascade refrigeration cycle.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the high and low temperature stages operate independently with single refrigerants. Structurally, the system comprises two segments: the high-temperature NH3 system, resembling conventional setups, includes the refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system features a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator is a pivotal component, effectively separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in the CO2 compression system to prevent the compressor's wet stroke. It stabilizes the liquid level during pump operations and stores returning liquid when the pump halts. Should the separator serve as a CO2 reservoir when inactive, its capacity must accommodate the system's entire CO2 liquid volume. Moreover, an auxiliary evaporator atop the separator helps mitigate excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In this cascade system, the condensing evaporator doubles as the NH3-side evaporator and CO2-side condenser, facilitating heat absorption and compound liquid evaporation within the tube as carbon dioxide gas transitions to liquid in the shell.
