The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is a sophisticated dual-stage process, meticulously designed with a high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 and a low-temperature stage employing CO2 as refrigerants. At the high-temperature level, NH3's evaporation acts as a catalyst, condensing the CO2 gas emanating from the low-temperature stage. This magnificent interplay is orchestrated through a condensation evaporator, the pivotal component harmonizing these stages by serving as both the condenser for CO2 and the evaporator for NH3.
In this advanced system, the heat load transfers seamlessly to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator, which then relays absorbed heat to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. This NH3 refrigerant, in turn, dispenses the heat to the high-temperature condenser, ultimately releasing it environmentally through a cooling medium. The CO2, now in liquid form, advances to the CO2 reservoir before flowing into the CO2 gas-liquid separator through the dryer filter and throttle valve. With the aid of a CO2 circulation pump, the liquid CO2 navigates to the CO2 evaporator, absent of cooling devices like single freezers or chillers. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, where gaseous CO2 is drawing in by the compressor for pressurization back into the condensing evaporator. This elegant cycle perpetuates, completing the comprehensive cascade refrigeration cycle.

The high-temperature NH3 refrigerating system mirrors conventional setups, incorporating not just a refrigeration compressor, but also a condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system supplements its CO2 compressor with a condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling apparatus, evaporator, and an expansion vessel, ensuring comprehensive performance.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a pivotal role, meticulously separating CO2 gas droplets post-evaporation in the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This prevents compressor wet strokes, maintains liquid stability during pump operation, and safely stores equipment and pipeline return liquids when pumps halt. The separator, doubling as a CO2 reservoir when inactive, should accommodate the entire system's CO2 liquid volume. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator at the separator's top is crucial to counter excessive CO2 pressures post-shutdown. In this cascade system, the condensing evaporator performs dual roles, serving as an evaporator on the NH3 side and a condenser on the CO2 side, ensuring seamless heat absorption and conversion of carbon dioxide gas into liquid.
