NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration systems consist of two stages: high-temperature and low-temperature. The high-temperature stage uses NH3 as the refrigerant, while the low-temperature stage employs CO2. The NH3 refrigerant evaporates at the high-temperature level to condense CO2 gas from the low-temperature level. A condensation evaporator connects both stages, serving as the CO2 condenser and NH3 evaporator.
 
Heat is transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat is then moved to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator, which releases it to the environment via the cooling medium. The condensed CO2 is stored in a reservoir, passed through a dryer filter and throttle valve, and then directed into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Liquid CO2 is pumped to the CO2 evaporator, and after evaporation, two-phase CO2 returns to the separator. The gaseous CO2 is compressed back into the condensing evaporator, repeating the cycle for continuous refrigeration.

In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, high and low-temperature stages function with single refrigerants. High-temperature NH3 systems include conventional components like compressors, condensers, liquid storage, gas-liquid separators, and throttling devices. The low-temperature CO2 system comprises CO2 compressors, condensing evaporators, reservoirs, gas-liquid separators, filter dryers, pumps, throttling devices, evaporators, and expansion vessels.
 
The CO2 gas-liquid separator isolates CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, preventing wet compression strokes and maintaining a stable liquid level during pump operation. It doubles as a CO2 reservoir when the system is off, storing all CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator should be installed on top to manage high-pressure CO2 post-shutdown. In NH3/CO2 cascade systems, the condensing evaporator acts both as an NH3 evaporator and a CO2 condenser, where compound liquid evaporates to absorb heat, condensing CO2 gas into liquid.

(2) CO2 as a Medium: CO2 systems ensure personnel safety when used in occupied areas, such as single freezing machines and warehouses.
