1. Understanding the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System Principle
NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration systems elegantly bridge two distinct temperature stages. The high-temperature stage operates with NH3 as its refrigerant, while the low-temperature stage employs CO2. The magic happens when NH3's evaporation in the high-temperature stage cools and condenses CO2 gas from the low-temperature stage. A sophisticated condensing evaporator seamlessly connects these stages, serving as both condenser for the low-temperature side and evaporator for the high-temperature side, creating a harmonious refrigeration cycle.
In this ingenious system, heat transfer is a choreographed dance: the CO2 refrigerant absorbs heat via the end evaporator, then transfers it to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The NH3, in turn, releases this heat to the environment via the high-temperature condenser. Once condensed, CO2 enters the reservoir, then flows through a dryer filter and a throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Here, a CO2 circulation pump directs the liquid CO2 to the evaporator. After the evaporator, two-phase CO2 returns to the separator, while gaseous CO2 is compressed by the compressor back into the condensing evaporator. This elegant cycle completes the sophisticated cascade refrigeration process.

The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional setups, equipped with a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. An auxiliary evaporator is strategically placed atop the separator to curb excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade, the condensing evaporator plays dual roles: NH3 side evaporator and CO2 side condenser, with compound liquid evaporation absorbing heat in the tube while CO2 gas condenses into a liquid in the shell.
