1. NH3/CO2: The Ingenious Principle Behind Cascade Refrigeration Systems
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system masterfully intertwines two distinct stages: the high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 and the low-temperature stage employing CO2. In a brilliant dance of thermodynamics, the NH3 evaporates at the high temperature level, ingeniously condensing the CO2 emitted from the low temperature level. Here, a single condensation evaporator plays a dual role, serving as both the condenser for the low temperature level and the evaporator for the high temperature level, creating a harmonious connection between the two stages.
 
Heat transfer in this innovative system begins with the CO2 refrigerant absorbing the load at the end evaporator. This absorbed heat is seamlessly transferred to the high-temperature NH3 through the condensing evaporator, which then proceeds to the high-temperature condenser, ultimately releasing the heat into the environment via the cooling medium. The journey of the condensed CO2 continues as it enters the CO2 reservoir, then flows through a dryer filter and throttle valve, reaching the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Here, the liquid CO2 is propelled to the CO2 evaporator by the circulation pump. Without the need for end cooling devices like freezers, the cycle sees the two-phase CO2 return to the gas-liquid separator. The gaseous CO2 is then drawn into the compressor, compressed back into the condensing evaporator, and the cycle repeats seamlessly, completing the cascade refrigeration cycle.

Within the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, each temperature level functions as a distinct refrigeration system utilizing a single refrigerant. The equipment is thoughtfully divided into two parts: the high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional systems, featuring not only the refrigeration compressor but also a condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low temperature CO2 system is equipped with a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and an expansion vessel, ensuring a comprehensive and efficient cooling process.
The In the realm of CO2 compression refrigeration systems, the CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a pivotal role in separating droplets of CO2 gas from the evaporator, safeguarding the compressor from wet strokes, maintaining a stable liquid level during pump operation, and accommodating liquid return from end equipment and pipelines when the pump halts. When idle, this separator doubles as a CO2 reservoir with a capacity to house all CO2 liquid within the system. An auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator ensures CO2 pressure remains within safe limits post-shutdown. Uniquely, the condensing evaporator of the NH3/CO2 cascade system serves as both the NH3-side evaporator and the CO2-side condenser, where the compound liquid vaporizes, absorbing heat within the tube, while CO2 gas undergoes transformation into a liquid state within the shell.
