1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of the Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is an innovative two-stage process comprising high and low temperature phases. In the high temperature phase, ammonia (NH3) serves as the refrigerant, while the low temperature phase utilizes carbon dioxide (CO2). The brilliance of this system lies in the evaporation of NH3 at the high temperature phase, which efficiently condenses the refrigerant CO2 from the low temperature phase. A condensation evaporator ingeniously connects these phases, functioning dually as the low temperature condenser and the high temperature evaporator.
Heat transfer within the system is methodical and efficient. Initially, the heat load is conveyed to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. Subsequently, this absorbed heat is transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The high-temperature NH3 refrigerant then dissipates this heat to the environment through the high-temperature condenser using a cooling medium. Post-condensation in the evaporator, the CO2 migrates to a reservoir, processed further through a dryer filter and throttle valve, before being propelled by the CO2 circulation pump to the evaporator. Here, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, and gaseous CO2 is compressed into the condensing evaporator by the compressor, perpetuating the entire cascade cycle seamlessly.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, single refrigerant systems define both the high and low temperature phases. Equipment is meticulously divided: the high-temperature NH3 system, akin to conventional systems, encompasses the refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Conversely, the low-temperature CO2 system, beyond the CO2 compressor, integrates the condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a crucial role, efficiently segregating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in the CO2 compression system. This prevents compressor wet strokes and ensures stable liquid levels during pump operations, safeguarding equipment and pipelines upon pump halts. When inactive, the separator can store all system CO2 as a reservoir. Its design includes an auxiliary evaporator to prevent excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. The condensing evaporator, in our NH3/CO2 system, is multifunctional, acting as both the NH3 side evaporator and CO2 side condenser, where the compound liquid evaporates, absorbing heat within, while CO2 condenses into liquid.

(1.(3)) Full utilization of NH3 in high-temperature regions maximizes its excellent heat transfer properties to effectively cool CO2.
