1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System is an engineering marvel composed of two distinct yet harmoniously functioning stages: the high temperature stage and the low temperature stage. In this sophisticated setup, ammonia (NH3) serves as the refrigerant at the high temperature stage, while carbon dioxide (CO2) takes on the role at the low temperature stage. This innovative system utilizes the evaporation of NH3 in the high temperature level to effectively condense the CO2 refrigerant gas discharged from the low temperature level. A specially designed condensation evaporator acts as the linchpin, seamlessly connecting the high and low temperature levels by doubling as both the condenser for the low temperature stage and the evaporator for the high temperature stage.
In this advanced refrigeration process, the heat load is meticulously transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. CO2 then dutifully absorbs the heat, which is transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. This high-temperature NH3 refrigerant subsequently releases the absorbed heat to the environment through the high-temperature condenser using a cooling medium. The CO2, now condensed in the condensing evaporator, is gathered in the CO2 reservoir and from there, it journeys into the CO2 gas-liquid separator via the dryer filter and throttle valve. The liquid CO2 is then dispatched to the CO2 evaporator by the CO2 circulation pump—no end cooling device required, such as single freezer or chiller. Upon exiting the evaporator, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, and the gaseous CO2 is drawn in by the compressor to be compressed into the condensing evaporator. This cycle is seamlessly repeated, ensuring the completion of an entire cascade refrigeration cycle.
Within the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System, each temperature level functions as an independent refrigeration system utilizing a single refrigerant, yet they work together in perfect synergy. The high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system mirrors the conventional refrigeration setup and is comprised of standard components like the refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. In parallel, the low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system features its own CO2 compressor, along with a condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel. Together, these carefully engineered components form a robust system that stands at the forefront of refrigeration technology.

This ensures the compressor avoids the peril of wet stroke, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and safely stores pipeline liquid return when the pump ceases operation. In scenarios where the gas-liquid separator functions as a CO2 reservoir when not in operation, it is crucial that its volume is sufficient to accommodate all CO2 liquid in the system. An auxiliary evaporator is strategically placed atop the gas-liquid separator to prevent excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System, the condensing evaporator skillfully serves dual roles: as an evaporator on the NH3 side and as a condenser on the CO2 side. Within this ingenious design, the compound liquid evaporates and absorbs heat inside the tube, while CO2 gas is proficiently condensed into liquid in the shell.

(1.(3)) This system capitalizes on the excellent heat transfer characteristics of NH3 in the high-temperature region to efficiently cool CO2.
(2) CO2 as a Medium: In personnel-intensive environments such as single-freezing machines and warehouses, CO2 ensures the safety of both personnel and property by being the medium introduced.
