1. NH3/CO2: The Principle Behind the Cascade Refrigeration System
NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration systems ingeniously combine two distinct phases: the high temperature stage and the low temperature stage. The high temperature stage employs NH3 (ammonia) as its refrigerant, while the low temperature stage utilizes CO2. This meticulous design allows the evaporation of NH3 within the high temperature level to effectively condense CO2 gas coming from the low temperature level. A pivotal condensation evaporator bridges these two stages, doubling as the low temperature condenser and the high temperature evaporator, ensuring seamless thermal exchange.
The heat load is adeptly transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. CO2 refrigerant then absorbs this heat and passes it to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through a condensing evaporator. Subsequently, NH3 transfers the heat to a high-temperature condenser, releasing it effectively to the environment with the aid of a cooling medium. Condensed CO2 travels from the condensing evaporator to the CO2 reservoir and through the dryer filter and throttle valve to the CO2 gas-liquid separator. A CO2 circulation pump channels liquid CO2 to the CO2 evaporator. Post evaporation, two-phase CO2 returns to the separator, with gaseous CO2 being suctioned into the compressor, compressed back into the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the efficient cycle of refrigeration.
NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration systems distinctly segment high and low temperature levels, each employing a single refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional cooling systems, featuring refrigeration compressors, condensers, liquid storage, gas-liquid separators, and throttling devices. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system boasts a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, optimizing every step of the cooling process.

This prevents compressor wet stroke, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operations, and accommodates liquid return from end equipment and pipelines when the pump ceases operation. When idle, if used as a reservoir, the separator's volume should encompass all CO2 liquid in the system. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator ensures CO2 pressure remains optimal post-shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator simultaneously serves as the NH3-side evaporator and CO2-side condenser, where compound liquid evaporates and absorbs heat in the tube, and CO2 gas efficiently condenses into liquid within the shell.
