1. Understanding the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System Principle
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system ingeniously comprises two distinct stages: a high temperature stage utilizing NH3 and a low temperature stage employing CO2. This innovative design allows NH3 evaporation in the high-temperature system to efficiently condense the CO2 refrigerant gas from the low-temperature system. A specially designed condensing evaporator seamlessly bridges these two stages, functioning as both the low-temperature condenser and the high-temperature evaporator, ensuring optimal efficiency and synergy between each stage.
In this sophisticated system, the heat load is absorbed by the CO2 refrigerant at the end evaporator stage. This absorbed heat is then transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant subsequently dispatches this heat to the high-temperature condenser, where it is released into the environment through a cooling medium. Once condensed within the condensing evaporator, CO2 moves into the CO2 reservoir before passing through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Here, liquid CO2 is pumped into the CO2 evaporator through a circulation pump. Post-evaporation, the resultant two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, while gaseous CO2 is drawn in by the compressor and compressed once more in the condensing evaporator, perpetuating this continuous and efficient refrigeration cycle.
Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, each temperature level operates as an independent refrigeration system using a single refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional setups, featuring not only a refrigeration compressor but also a condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system boasts a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, all harmoniously integrated to deliver optimal cooling performance.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a pivotal role in segregating CO2 gas droplets post-evaporation, thereby preventing compressor wet stroking and maintaining a stable liquid level during pump operation. It doubles as a reservoir when inactive, with sufficient volume to accommodate all CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator stationed atop prevents excessive CO2 pressure during shutdowns. In the NH3/CO2 system, the condensing evaporator is both the NH3 side's evaporator and the CO2 side's condenser, enabling compound liquid evaporation and heat absorption within the tube, while concurrently condensing carbon dioxide gas into a liquid within the shell.
