1. Understanding the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration Principle
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously designed with two distinct stages: a high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 as the refrigerant and a low-temperature stage employing CO2. This innovative structure uses the evaporative cooling of NH3 in the high temperature section to efficiently condense CO2 gas emanating from the low-temperature level. A sophisticated condensation evaporator harmoniously links these stages, serving dually as the condenser for the CO2 stage and the evaporator for the NH3 stage.
In this advanced system, thermal loads are adeptly transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat is then conveyed from CO2 to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. Subsequently, the NH3 refrigerant expels this heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it into the environment with the aid of a cooling medium. Once condensed in the evaporator, CO2 flows into a CO2 reservoir and proceeds through a dryer filter and throttle valve to the gas-liquid separator. Here, liquid CO2 is propelled to the evaporator via the circulation pump, completing the efficient and continuous cascade refrigeration cycle.
The NH3/CO2 cascade system strategically divides into two single-refrigerant systems for high and low temperatures. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional designs with components like a compressor, condenser, liquid storage, and more. Meanwhile, the CO2 system features a compressor, condensing evaporator, and an array of peripherals including a reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, and expansion vessel, ensuring comprehensive and effective refrigeration.

It stabilizes liquid levels during pump operation and manages liquid return during stoppages. Furthermore, when inactive, it serves as a CO2 reservoir, with its capacity accommodating all system CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator on top prevents excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 system, the condensing evaporator's dual role ensures effective heat exchange with CO2 condensing into a liquid state in the shell and NH3 evaporating in the tube.
