Innovative NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
1. Pioneering Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously crafted from two distinct stages: the high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 and the low-temperature stage utilizing CO2. In this sophisticated system, the evaporation of NH3 in the high-temperature stage condenses the CO2 gas discharged from the low-temperature stage. A condensation evaporator ingeniously links both stages, serving as both the condenser for the low-temperature stage and the evaporator for the high-temperature stage.
 
Heat load seamlessly transfers to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat in the CO2 refrigerant is then conveyed to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. This NH3 refrigerant further transfers the heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it to the environment through a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 then enters a reservoir and subsequently, through a dryer filter and throttle valve, reaches a gas-liquid separator. A CO2 circulation pump propels the liquid CO2 to the evaporator, and the ensuing two-phase CO2 returns to the separator. The gaseous CO2 is then compressed back into the condensing evaporator, thus perpetuating the entire cascade refrigeration cycle.

In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the high and low-temperature levels each utilize a single refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system comprises a conventional setup including a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system encompasses a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
 
TheCO2gas-liquid separator plays a crucial role in isolating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator to prevent compressor wet stroke, maintain a stable liquid level during pump operation, and store liquid return when the pump is inactive. If used as a CO2 reservoir when not running, it should accommodate all CO2 liquid within the system. An auxiliary evaporator should be installed atop the gas-liquid separator to prevent excessive CO2 pressure after shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the condensing evaporator acts dually as the NH3 evaporator and CO2 condenser, where compound liquid evaporates and absorbs heat within the tube, and CO2 gas condenses into a liquid in the shell.

(2) CO2, as the medium, ensures safety by entering personnel-intensive operation rooms (such as single-freezing chambers) and warehouses, securing both personnel and property.
