1. NH3/CO2: The Innovative Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, a marvel of engineering, consists of two distinct stages: the high-temperature stage and the low-temperature stage. NH3 serves as the refrigerant for the high-temperature stage, while CO2 cools the low-temperature stage. Ingeniously, the evaporation of NH3 within the high-temperature system facilitates the condensation of CO2 gas expelled from the low-temperature system. A condensation evaporator seamlessly links these stages, acting dually as the condenser for the low temperature and the evaporator for high temperature.
In this sophisticated system, the heat load transitions to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The heat absorbed by CO2 is then efficiently transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator, before being ultimately released to the environment via a high-temperature condenser and cooling medium. The condensing evaporator plays a pivotal role by channeling the condensed CO2 into a reservoir, which then proceeds through a dryer filter and throttle valve into a gas-liquid separator. This seamless operation sends liquid CO2 to the evaporator via a circulation pump, ensuring a constant cycle that sustains the entire refrigeration process. Post evaporation, CO2 in its two-phase returns to the gas-liquid separator, where gaseous CO2 is efficiently compressed back into the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the cycle.
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system distinguishes itself by employing single refrigerant systems at each temperature level. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional setups, encompassing not just a compressor but also a condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system features an impressive array of components: a CO2 compressor, a condensing evaporator, a reservoir, a gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and an expansion vessel.
The Within the CO2 compression refrigeration setup, the gas-liquid separator is crucial for isolating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator. This prevents compressor wet strokes, maintains stable liquid levels during pump operations, and manages liquid return during pump halts. If utilized as a non-operational reservoir, the separator must accommodate all CO2 liquid within the system. An auxiliary evaporator is strategically placed atop the separator to counteract excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In this cascade system, the condensing evaporator serves a dual purpose: acting as the NH3-side evaporator and the CO2-side condenser, facilitating efficient heat absorption and CO2 condensation.
