The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is a marvel of engineering, comprising two distinct stages: the high-temperature stage powered by NH3 and the low-temperature stage where CO2 reigns supreme. In this symbiotic system, the evaporation of NH3 refrigerant at the high temperature level serves a crucial purpose—condensing the CO2 gas released from the low temperature level. A condensation evaporator acts as the bridge between these two stages, doubling as a condenser for the low temperature and an evaporator for the high temperature, ensuring seamless operation and maximum efficiency.
In this sophisticated process, the heat load is initially carried to the end evaporator, where CO2 refrigerant takes over. The absorbed heat is then transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. This heat is finally dispelled into the environment through the high-temperature condenser with the help of a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 flows into the CO2 reservoir before moving through a dryer filter and throttle valve to the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Liquid CO2 is propelled by a circulation pump to the CO2 evaporator. Without end cooling devices, such as single freezers, the two-phase CO2 travels back to the gas-liquid separator, where the gaseous CO2 is drawn in by the compressor, compressed, and cycled back into the condensing evaporator. This rhythmic cycle ensures a continuous cascade refrigeration process.

The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional refrigeration systems, featuring not only a refrigeration compressor but also a condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system comprises a CO2 compressor, a condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and an expansion vessel, each playing a vital role in this advanced cooling solution.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays an essential role within the CO2 compression refrigeration system, expertly isolating droplets from the CO2 gas post-evaporation to prevent compressor wet strokes. This device ensures a consistent liquid level during pump operation and accommodates liquid return from equipment and pipelines when the pump halts. If used as a reservoir during downtime, the separator must accommodate the entire system's CO2 liquid. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator is recommended at the top to stave off excessive CO2 pressure after shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator serves dual purposes, operating as both an evaporator on the NH3 side and a condenser on the CO2 side, where compound liquid evaporates, absorbing heat, while CO2 gas transitions into liquid within the shell.
