1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system ingeniously combines a dual-phase approach: a high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 as the refrigerant and a low-temperature stage employing CO2. The brilliance lies in the NH3's evaporation at high temperature which effectively condenses the CO2 gas discharged from the low temperature phase. This seamless connection is achieved through a condensation evaporator, serving dual roles as both the condenser for CO2 at low temperatures and the evaporator for NH3 at high temperatures.
In this system, the heat load is deftly transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat by CO2 is then efficiently transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. NH3, in turn, transfers this heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it into the environment. Condensed CO2 journeys into the CO2 reservoir, navigates through the dryer filter and throttle valve into the gas-liquid separator, and then is propelled into the CO2 evaporator by a circulation pump. This sophisticated cycle of evaporation, compression, and condensation repeats, maintaining an optimal cascade refrigeration cycle.
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system distinguishes itself with its modular design, comprising separate high and low temperature refrigeration systems, each utilizing single refrigerants. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional setups with a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the CO2 system, tailored for low temperatures, includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a critical role by ensuring the separation of CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator within the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This prevents compressor wet stroke, stabilizes liquid levels during pump operations, and manages liquid returns when the pump is inactive. As a reservoir, it must accommodate the entire CO2 liquid volume. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator is installed atop the separator to mitigate excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator functions dually as an NH3 evaporator and a CO2 condenser, where the compound liquid evaporates, absorbs heat in the tube, while CO2 gas condenses into liquid in the shell.

(1.(1)) The NH3/CO2 cascade system significantly lowers NH3 condensing pressure, reducing refrigerant charge to about one-tenth of traditional systems.
(1.(2)) NH3 is confined to the machine and equipment rooms, akin to a 'tiger' kept securely in a 'cage', monitored by experienced personnel.
(1.(3)) Maximizes NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in high-temperature zones to efficiently cool CO2.
(2) CO2 serves as an optimal medium in personnel-heavy areas like operation rooms and warehouses, ensuring safety for both individuals and property.
