1. NH3/CO2: The Ingenious Principle of the Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is meticulously engineered with two distinct stages: the high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 and the low-temperature stage employing CO2 as refrigerants. In this innovative setup, the evaporative process of NH3 in the high-temperature stage is purposefully harnessed to condense the CO2 gas vented from the low-temperature stage. Acting as a crucial bridge between these two stages, the condensation evaporator serves the dual purpose of being both the condenser for the CO2 and the evaporator for the NH3, ensuring efficient thermal exchange within the system.
The heat load is expertly transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the terminal evaporator, from where the absorbed heat is carried to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. This NH3 refrigerant then efficiently transfers the gathered heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it into the environment with the aid of a cooling medium. In this seamless process, the CO2, once condensed, is collected in the CO2 reservoir, subsequently progressing through the CO2 gas-liquid separator after passing through a dryer filter and a throttle valve. The liquid CO2 is then meticulously circulated through the CO2 evaporator using a circulation pump, completing a cycle by returning to the gas-liquid separator, while the gaseous CO2 is drawn by the compressor and recompressed, perpetuating the cycle.
NH3/CO2: Within this cascade refrigeration system, separate high and low temperature levels are seamlessly managed by individual refrigerant systems. The high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system mirrors a traditional system, comprising a refrigeration compressor, along with a condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system is equipped with a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, ensuring robust and efficient cooling performance.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays an essential role in the CO2 compression refrigeration system by efficiently separating droplets from the evaporator to prevent compressor wet stroke, maintain a stable liquid level during pump operation, and store returning liquids when the pump halts. When used as a CO2 reservoir during inactivity, its capacity must accommodate the entire system's CO2 liquid volume. Additionally, to prevent excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown, an auxiliary evaporator is strategically placed atop the separator. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator uniquely operates as the NH3-side evaporator and CO2-side condenser, where compound liquid evaporates and absorbs heat inside the tube, while CO2 gas undergoes condensation in the shell.
