1. NH3/CO2: The Ingenious Principle of Cascade Refrigeration Systems
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is a marvel of engineering, elegantly split into two integral sections: the high temperature stage employing NH3 as the refrigerant, and the low temperature stage leveraging CO2. In a harmonious dance of cooling, the high-temperature NH3 evaporates to efficiently condense CO2 gas from the lower temperature stage. A sophisticated condensation evaporator acts as the intermediary, connecting the two stages: it serves as the condenser for the low temperature stage and the evaporator for the high temperature stage, thus ensuring seamless thermal interaction.
The thermal journey begins as the heat load is transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. Once absorbed, this heat is gracefully passed to the high-temperature NH3 through the condensing evaporator, from where it elegantly exits to the environment via the high-temperature condenser, facilitated by a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 then journeys to the CO2 reservoir before proceeding through a dryer filter and throttle valve, onwards to the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Driven by the CO2 circulation pump, the liquid CO2 reaches the CO2 evaporator. Post-evaporation, the CO2 returns in a two-phase state to the separator, where gaseous CO2 is drawn by the compressor and returned to the condensing evaporator, perpetuating a flawless cascade refrigeration cycle.
Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the high and low temperature levels are uniquely maintained by their respective single refrigerant systems. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional refrigeration techniques, comprising a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Concurrently, the low-temperature CO2 system is equipped with its own set of sophisticated apparatus: a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, each playing a vital role in achieving optimum refrigeration.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator is meticulously designed to efficiently separate CO2 gas droplets post-evaporation in the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This prevents compressor wet strokes, maintains a consistent liquid level during pump operation, and accommodates liquid return when the pump is halted. Should the gas-liquid separator serve as a CO2 reservoir when inactive, its capacity must encompass the entire system's CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator atop the separator is essential for mitigating excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the symbiotic NH3/CO2 system, the condensing evaporator doubles as the evaporator for NH3 and the condenser for CO2, with compound liquids evaporating within the tube, while CO2 gas undergoes a serene transformation into liquid within the shell.
