1. NH3/CO2: The Core Principles of the Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System is ingeniously designed with two distinct stages: a high-temperature stage that utilizes NH3 as its refrigerant, and a low-temperature stage powered by CO2. At the high-temperature level, NH3 evaporates to effectively condense the CO2 gas, which is expelled from the low-temperature level. A specially designed condensation evaporator seamlessly links these stages, acting as the condenser for the CO2 level and the evaporator for the NH3 level.

Heat load is dynamically transferred to the CO2 refrigerant through the end evaporator, with the heat absorbed by CO2 moving efficiently to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. This NH3 refrigerant then disperses the heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it to the environment through a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 proceeds into a reservoir, then navigates through a filter and throttle valve to enter the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Liquid CO2 is circulated to the CO2 evaporator, and post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the separator. Gaseous CO2 is then compressed into the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the entire refrigeration cycle in an uninterrupted loop.

In the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System, both the high and low-temperature stages operate as independent refrigeration systems utilizing a single refrigerant. Each is equipped distinctly: the high-temperature NH3 system mirrors traditional setups with a compressor, condenser, liquid storage, separator, and throttle device, while the low-temperature CO2 system incorporates a compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, separator, filter dryer, pump, throttle device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator is meticulously engineered to segregate CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, preventing compressor wet strokes, maintaining liquid stability during pump operation, and storing liquid returns when the pump halts. When used as a reservoir, its capacity accommodates all system CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator is strategically placed atop the separator to ensure CO2 pressure remains controlled post-shutdown. In this system, the condensing evaporator performs dual roles: as an NH3 evaporator and a CO2 condenser, facilitating heat absorption and condensation within the system.
