1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously designed with two distinct stages: high temperature and low temperature. The high temperature stage employs NH3 as the refrigerant, while the low temperature stage utilizes CO2. In a remarkable process, the evaporation of NH3 in the high temperature system condenses the CO2 gas discharged from the low temperature system. These two stages are seamlessly interconnected by a condensation evaporator, which acts as both the condenser for the low temperature stage and the evaporator for the high temperature stage, ensuring efficient thermal exchange.

Through the end evaporator, heat is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant, which subsequently passes the absorbed heat to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. This high-temperature NH3 refrigerant then channels the heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it into the environment using a cooling medium. The CO2, now condensed in the evaporator, is stored in the CO2 reservoir before making its journey through the dryer filter and throttle valve to the CO2 gas-liquid separator. The liquid CO2 is propelled by the CO2 circulation pump to the CO2 evaporator, bypassing any terminal cooling devices like single freezers or chillers. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 makes its return to the gas-liquid separator, where gaseous CO2 is drawn in by the compressor, compressed, and sent back into the condensing evaporator, perpetuating this efficient cascade refrigeration cycle.

In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, each stage operates as a standalone refrigeration system using a distinct refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional systems, equipped with a compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, ensuring comprehensive and efficient operation.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a pivotal role in the CO2 compression refrigeration system by efficiently separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, thus protecting the compressor from wet strokes, maintaining a steady liquid level during pump operation, and storing pipeline liquid return when the pump is stationary. Functioning as a CO2 reservoir during inactivity, it’s designed to accommodate all system CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator mitigates excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator serves dual roles: as the NH3 side evaporator and CO2 side condenser. It facilitates compound liquid evaporation and heat absorption within the tube, while concurrently condensing CO2 gas into liquid in the shell, showcasing the system's versatile thermal management.

2. Benefits of the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
(1) Enhanced Safety with Reduced NH3 Concerns:
(1.(1)) The NH3/CO2 cascade system significantly lowers the condensing pressure of NH3 refrigerant, reducing it to about one-tenth of traditional ammonia systems, thereby enhancing safety and reliability.
(1.(2)) NH3 is confined to controlled environments like the machine room and equipment room, akin to a 'tiger in a cage,' diligently monitored by skilled technicians.
(1.(3)) This system fully leverages NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in the high-temperature zone, optimizing it for CO2 cooling.
(2) CO2 Integration in High-Traffic Areas: CO2, as a medium, is safely introduced into operational areas with high personnel activity, like single-freezing machines and warehouses, ensuring utmost safety for both personnel and assets.
