1. NH3/CO2: The Underlying Principle of Cascade Refrigeration
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system ingeniously integrates a high and low temperature stage. At the high-temperature stage, ammonia (NH3) serves as the refrigerant, while the low-temperature stage employs carbon dioxide (CO2). The NH3 refrigerant in the high-temperature system evaporates, effectively condensing the CO2 gas from the low-temperature stage. A condensation evaporator ingeniously connects these two realms, functioning as the condenser for the low-temperature stage and the evaporator for the high-temperature stage, ensuring seamless operation.
The cooling process is a marvel of efficiency: heat load travels to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator, transferring its absorbed heat to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. This NH3 refrigerant then offloads the heat to a high-temperature condenser, releasing it into the environment via a cooling medium. Once condensed in the evaporator, CO2 enters a reservoir, transitioning through a dryer filter and throttle valve to a gas-liquid separator. The CO2 circulation pump propels the liquid CO2 to an evaporator. Post-evaporation, two-phase CO2 cycles back to the separator, where gaseous CO2 is compressed and sent to the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the cascade refrigeration cycle.
NH3/CO2 systems distinctly separate high and low temperatures, each using a unique refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional systems, featuring a compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system comprises a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, together creating an efficient dual-cooling setup.
The CO2 gas-liquid separators are pivotal in isolating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in CO2 compression refrigeration systems. This prevents compressor wet strokes, stabilizes liquid levels during pump operation, and stores returning liquid when pumps halt. As a reservoir, it must accommodate the entire CO2 liquid system volume. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator on top protects against excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In NH3/CO2 systems, the dual-function condensing evaporator acts as an NH3-side evaporator and a CO2-side condenser, where compound liquid absorbs heat and CO2 gas converts to liquid.
