1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
In the innovative NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, an impeccable fusion of two stages is achieved: the high-temperature stage, utilizing NH3 as the refrigerant, and the low-temperature stage, employing CO2. The distinguished evaporation process of NH3 at high temperatures facilitates the condensation of CO2 discharged from the lower temperature stage. A versatile condensation evaporator masterfully bridges these stages, serving dually as the condenser for the low-temperature and the evaporator for the high-temperature, ensuring seamless operation across varying conditions.
The thermal exchange within the system is meticulously optimized as the heat load transitions to CO2 through the end evaporator. The absorbed heat by CO2 is further transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. Subsequently, the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant gracefully dissipates the heat to the environment through a high-temperature condenser and cooling medium. The resulting condensed CO2 proceeds into the CO2 reservoir and advances to the CO2 gas-liquid separator, passing through a dryer filter and throttle valve. The liquid CO2, propelled by the CO2 circulation pump, enters the CO2 evaporator. Post-evaporation, the returned two-phase CO2 is guided back to the gas-liquid separator, while the gaseous CO2 is channeled by the compressor into the condensing evaporator. This repetition ensures a flawless and continuous cascade refrigeration cycle.

The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional setups, complete with a compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 setup is equally equipped, boasting a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, all working in harmonious synergy.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a pivotal role in segregating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator within the CO2 compression refrigeration system, effectively safeguarding the compressor from wet stroke. It maintains a steady liquid level when operational and adeptly holds returning liquid when the pump ceases. As a reservoir during non-operation, its capacity must encompass all system CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator ensures pressure stability post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator doubles its function as NH3's evaporator and CO2's condenser, facilitating the condensation of CO2 gas into liquid within the shell.
