1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of the Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system ingeniously combines two distinct stages: high-temperature and low-temperature. In this innovative system, NH3 is utilized as the refrigerant in the high-temperature stage, while CO2 takes the spotlight in the low-temperature stage. The brilliance of this design lies in the way it harnesses the evaporation of NH3 in the high-temperature level to effectively condense the CO2 refrigerant gas from the low-temperature level. This is achieved through a sophisticated condensation evaporator, which seamlessly connects the two stages, functioning as both the condenser for the low-temperature level and the evaporator for the high-temperature level.

The thermal load gracefully transfers to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. Subsequently, the absorbed heat is adeptly conveyed to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The high-temperature NH3 refrigerant then completes the cycle by transferring this heat to the high-temperature condenser, where it is gracefully released into the environment through a cooling medium. Further enhancing the system's efficiency, the condensed CO2 within the condensing evaporator is directed into the CO2 reservoir. From there, it seamlessly moves to the CO2 gas-liquid separator, via the dryer filter and throttle valve. The liquid CO2 is then expertly dispatched to the CO2 evaporator by the CO2 circulation pump, sans any end cooling device, such as a freezer or chiller. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, and the gaseous CO2 is elegantly drawn by the compressor and compressed back into the condensing evaporator. This cycle, which epitomizes efficiency, is consistently repeated to complete the entire cascade refrigeration cycle.

In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, both high and low-temperature levels are characterized by individual refrigerant systems. The equipment composition is meticulously divided into two segments: the high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system mirrors traditional refrigeration setups, encompassing not only the refrigeration compressor but also the condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Conversely, the low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system, in harmony with its NH3 counterpart, includes a CO2 compressor along with a condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a pivotal role in efficiently dividing CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator within the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This ensures the prevention of wet stroke in the compressor, maintains a steady liquid level during pump operation, and safely stores the liquid return from end equipment and pipelines when the pump is idle. If utilized as a CO2 reservoir during non-operation, its capacity must accommodate all the CO2 liquid within the system. Additionally, to effectively prevent excessive pressure post-shutdown, an auxiliary evaporator should be strategically positioned atop the gas-liquid separator. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the condensing evaporator serves dual roles: it is both the NH3 side's evaporator and the CO2 side's condenser, where the compound liquid elegantly evaporates and absorbs heat within the tube, and the CO2 gas masterfully condenses into liquid within the shell.

2. Advantages of the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System.
(1) Enhanced Safety by Reducing NH3 Hazards:
(1.(1)) The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system significantly lowers the condensing pressure of the NH3 refrigerant charge, achieving approximately 1/10th of the traditional ammonia refrigeration system's charge.
(1.(2)) By confining NH3 to the machine room and equipment room, it becomes akin to a 'tiger in a cage,' diligently monitored by skilled professionals.
(1.(3)) Fully optimizes NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in the high-temperature region, efficiently utilized to cool CO2.
(2) CO2 Integration for Personnel Safety: CO2, as a medium, is introduced into areas with high personnel density, such as operational rooms or warehouses, ensuring the utmost safety for both personnel and property.
