The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system elegantly marries two distinct stages: the high temperature stage utilizing NH3 (ammonia) as the refrigerant, and the low temperature stage employing CO2 (carbon dioxide). In this harmonious system, NH3 refrigerant evaporates at high temperatures to condense CO2 gas emitted from the low-temperature stage. The integration is achieved through a condensation evaporator, which simultaneously acts as the condenser for the low-temperature CO2 stage and the evaporator for the high-temperature NH3 stage, seamlessly connecting these two levels.
 
Heat transfer within this groundbreaking system happens through the end evaporator, where the thermal load is absorbed by CO2 refrigerant. The heat-laden CO2 then transfers this energy to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. This energy is subsequently released into the environment through a high-temperature condenser, facilitated by a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 proceeds to the CO2 reservoir, then traverses the dryer filter and throttle valve before entering the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Further propelled by a CO2 circulation pump, it reaches the CO2 evaporator (bypassing any end cooling devices such as single freezers or chillers). Post-evaporation, the bi-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, where the gaseous CO2 is compressed by the compressor, resuming its journey to the condensing evaporator. This cyclical process encapsulates the entire cascade refrigeration cycle.

When leveraged as a CO2 reservoir during downtime, its volume must suffice to contain the entire system's CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator efficiently curbs post-shutdown CO2 pressure surges. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade framework, the condensing evaporator serves dual roles: as NH3 side's evaporator and CO2 side's condenser, facilitating heat absorption through compound liquid evaporation and CO2 gas condensation into liquid within the shell.
