1. NH3/CO2: Understanding the Principle of Cascade Refrigeration
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system artfully combines two distinct stages: a high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 as the refrigerant and a low-temperature stage employing CO2. In the high-temperature system, the evaporation of NH3 refrigerant ingeniously condenses the CO2 refrigerant gas emitted from the low-temperature stage. This is achieved through a condensation evaporator, which serves the pivotal role of linking the high and low-temperature phases. It functions dually as the condenser for the low-temperature stage and the evaporator for the high-temperature stage, ensuring seamless integration and functionality across the system.
Through an end evaporator, the heat load is effectively transferred to the CO2 refrigerant, which then conveys the absorbed heat to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant, in turn, transfers the heat to a high-temperature condenser, releasing it smoothly into the environment with the aid of a cooling medium. Following condensation in the condensing evaporator, the CO2 moves to the CO2 reservoir and subsequently to the CO2 gas-liquid separator, passing through a dryer filter and throttle valve. The liquid CO2 is pushed to the CO2 evaporator by a circulation pump, bypassing any end cooling devices. Post-evaporation, two-phase CO2 circulates back to the gas-liquid separator, with gaseous CO2 being compressed anew in the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the entire cascade refrigeration cycle.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, separate refrigeration systems are established for each temperature level, both employing singular refrigerants. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors traditional refrigeration systems, featuring essential components such as a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Conversely, the low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system boasts a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and an expansion vessel, all meticulously configured to ensure optimal performance.

This prevents compressor wet stroke, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and allows for efficient liquid return management when the pump halts. Designed to function as a CO2 reservoir in dormant periods, it must accommodate the entire system's CO2 liquid. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator atop the separator ensures CO2 pressure remains controlled after system shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade framework, the condensing evaporator functions dually as an NH3-side evaporator and CO2-side condenser. Inside the tube, the compound liquid evaporates, absorbing heat, while within the shell, CO2 is seamlessly condensed into liquid form.
