1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously crafted with a dual-stage design: a high-temperature stage employing NH3 as the refrigerant, and a low-temperature stage utilizing CO2. In this marvel of engineering, the NH3 refrigerant evaporates at the high-temperature level to condense the CO2 refrigerant gas expelled from the low-temperature level. A condensation evaporator gracefully bridges these two temperature levels, serving simultaneously as the low-temperature condenser and the high-temperature evaporator.
In an exquisite transfer of thermal energy, the heat load is carried to the CO2 refrigerant through the terminal evaporator. This heat is then transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. The high-temperature NH3 refrigerant seamlessly diverts this heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it to the environment using a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 within the condensing evaporator flows into a CO2 reservoir and proceeds to the CO2 gas-liquid separator via a dryer filter and throttle valve. Liquid CO2 is elegantly propelled to the CO2 evaporator by the CO2 circulation pump. Post-evaporation, two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, while gaseous CO2 is drawn by the compressor and recompressed into the condensing evaporator. This cycle perpetuates the cascade refrigeration process flawlessly.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, each temperature level operates as a single refrigerant system. The high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system comprises a conventional setup including a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system is equipped with a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, working in harmony to ensure optimal refrigeration.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a pivotal role by delicately separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This prevention of compressor wet stroke ensures a stable liquid level during pump operation, while preserving the liquid return of end equipment and pipelines when the pump ceases operation. Should the gas-liquid separator function as a reservoir during downtime, it must accommodate all CO2 liquid within the system. Moreover, an auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator effectively curtails CO2 pressure surges post-shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the condensing evaporator ingeniously acts as the NH3 side evaporator and the CO2 side condenser. It facilitates the evaporation and heat absorption of the compound liquid within the tube, while CO2 gas transitions into liquid form in the shell.
