1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously designed with two primary stages: high temperature and low temperature. The high-temperature stage employs NH3 as the refrigerant, while the low-temperature stage utilizes CO2. In a seamless operation, NH3 evaporates in the high-temperature system to condense the CO2 gas that has been discharged from the low-temperature stage. The systems are beautifully integrated by a condensation evaporator, which simultaneously acts as the condenser for the low-temperature stage and the evaporator for the high-temperature stage, ensuring a flawless refrigeration cycle.
This innovative process involves transferring the heat load to the CO2 refrigerant through the end evaporator. The captured heat by CO2 is then transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. Subsequently, NH3 releases the heat to the environment through the high-temperature condenser and cooling medium. The condensed CO2 makes its way to the CO2 reservoir, progressing through the dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Here, the liquid CO2 is propelled to the CO2 evaporator by a circulation pump. As the cycle continues, two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, while the compressor powers gaseous CO2 back into the condensing evaporator. This elegant cycle ensures a continuous and efficient cascade refrigeration process.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the high and low temperatures are adeptly managed by individual refrigerant systems. The high-temperature NH3 system aligns with conventional refrigeration systems, hosting components like a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system boasts a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, forming a comprehensive and robust refrigeration solution.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator is a critical component for ensuring optimal performance in the CO2 compression refrigeration system. It efficiently separates CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, preventing compressor wet stroke and maintaining a stable liquid level during pump operation. In the event of pump shutdown, it serves as a reservoir, accommodating all CO2 liquid within the system. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator is strategically placed atop the gas-liquid separator to prevent excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator plays a dual role: acting as the evaporator on the NH3 side and the condenser on the CO2 side. It facilitates the evaporation and heat absorption in its tube while condensing carbon dioxide gas into liquid in its shell, showcasing an unparalleled synergy of components.
