1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration systems are ingeniously designed with two integral stages: a high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 as the cooling agent and a low-temperature stage employing CO2. In this innovative system, the high-temperature stage evaporates NH3 refrigerant to effectively condense the CO2 refrigerant expelled from the low-temperature stage. The system's critical component, the condensation evaporator, seamlessly integrates the high and low temperature stages, serving dually as the condenser for the low temperature and the evaporator for the high temperature stage.
The heat load is expertly shifted to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator, which then transfers the absorbed heat to the NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. This high-temperature NH3 refrigerant efficiently moves the collected heat to the condenser, releasing it to the environment with a cooling medium. Once condensed, the CO2 transitions to the CO2 reservoir, advancing to the gas-liquid separator after passing through a dryer filter and throttle valve. The CO2 circulation pump propels liquid CO2 to the evaporator, where it cycles back to the gas-liquid separator, and gaseous CO2 is compressed and reintroduced into the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the entire cascade refrigeration cycle in a seamless loop.
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system separates its operations into two distinct parts: the high-temperature NH3 system, reminiscent of conventional refrigeration setups but inclusive of compressors, condensers, liquid storage, gas-liquid separators, and throttling devices, and the low-temperature CO2 system, which features a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel. This dual-component system leverages the unique properties of each refrigerant to maximize efficiency and performance.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator performs a critical role in isolating droplets from CO2 gas within the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This prevents compressor wet strokes, stabilizes liquid levels during pump operation, and retains liquid from the end equipment and pipelines during pump shutdown. If used as a reservoir when idle, the separator's capacity must accommodate all CO2 liquid in the system. Moreover, an auxiliary evaporator atop the separator prevents excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator uniquely functions as both the NH3-side evaporator and the CO2-side condenser, facilitating effective heat absorption and CO2 condensation.
