1. NH3/CO2: The Ingenious Principle Behind the Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is a marvel of engineering, divided into two distinct sections: the high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 and the low-temperature stage employing CO2. In this ingenious setup, the evaporative process of NH3 at the high-temperature stage efficiently condenses the CO2 refrigerant gas from the low-temperature stage. Connecting these stages is a condensation evaporator, serving a dual purpose as both the condenser for the lower stage and the evaporator for the upper stage.
Heat transfer within the system is a seamless orchestration. The CO2 refrigerant, absorbing heat through the end evaporator, hands it over to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. This NH3 refrigerant then delivers the dissipated heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it into the environment with the help of a cooling medium. Post-condensation, the CO2 finds its way to the CO2 reservoir, moving through a dryer filter and throttle valve, reaching the gas-liquid separator. Liquid CO2 is propelled to the CO2 evaporator by a circulation pump. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, while the gaseous CO2 is captured by the compressor, recompressed into the condensing evaporator—thereby completing the relentless cycle of refrigeration.
In this NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration framework, both temperature stages are independent systems using singular refrigerants. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors traditional systems, comprising a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system is equally robust, including a compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling mechanism, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a crucial role in segregating CO2 gas droplets post-evaporation in the CO2 compression refrigeration cycle. This prevents compressor wet strokes, maintains liquid level stability during pump operations, and accommodates liquid returns upon pump shutdown. If used as a CO2 reservoir during non-operation, it must hold the entire system's CO2 liquid. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator atop the separator ensures no pressure build-up post-shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator functions dually as an NH3-side evaporator and a CO2-side condenser, where the compound liquid evaporates and absorbs heat in the tube, while CO2 gas is liquefied in the shell.
