Using ammonia as a refrigerant has the following advantages:
1. Ammonia is the most cost-effective refrigerant apart from air and water.
2. Boasting a low boiling point, ammonia maintains moderate pressure levels within the condenser and evaporator.
3. With a high refrigeration capacity per unit volume, ammonia requires less refrigerant circulation per unit of cooling capacity. It also possesses excellent thermal conductivity and a high latent heat of vaporization.
4. Minimal throttling loss and exceptional operating efficiency.
5. Its low operating pressure entails reduced requirements for machinery and lowers the material costs of refrigeration systems.
6. Ammonia has a strong, distinctive odor that is easily detectable by smell, leak test paper, or chemical tests. Even at low concentrations of 50mg/m3, ammonia can be identified by the human sense of smell.
7. Being insoluble in mineral oil, ammonia separates easily from oil at low temperatures. Ammonia, having a lower density than oil, allows refrigeration oil to settle below the ammonia liquid, facilitating easy return to the refrigeration system.
8. Displays stable thermodynamic and chemical properties at both room and low temperatures.
9. Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) = 0, Global Warming Potential (GWP) = 0.

The global trend is moving towards reducing ammonia quantities in systems and opting for energy-efficient air coolers. For instance, high-efficiency variable pitch stainless steel coil air coolers used as warehouse evaporators require only 5% of the traditional smooth discharge pipe's ammonia injection, cutting ammonia usage by a striking 95%.
