NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
1. The Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously composed of two stages: the high temperature stage employing NH3 as the refrigerant and the low temperature stage utilizing CO2. In this system, the evaporation of NH3 refrigerant at the high temperature stage condenses the CO2 gas from the low temperature stage. A condensation evaporator seamlessly connects these two stages, serving dually as the condenser for the low temperature stage and the evaporator for the high temperature stage.
 
Heat is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The CO2 refrigerant, in turn, delivers the absorbed heat to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant then transfers this heat to the high-temperature condenser, which releases it to the environment through a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 from the condensing evaporator flows into the CO2 reservoir, then passes through the dryer filter and throttle valve to enter the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Using a CO2 circulation pump, the liquid CO2 is sent to the CO2 evaporator. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, where the gaseous CO2 is compressed by the compressor into the condensing evaporator. This cycle repeats, completing the entire cascade refrigeration cycle.

In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, each temperature level is a distinct refrigeration system using a single refrigerant. Thus, the system is divided into two components: the high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system and the low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system. The high-temperature NH3 system includes components such as the refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system comprises components like the CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
 
TheCO2 gas-liquid separator performs the crucial role of separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This prevents compressor wet stroke, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and stores liquid return in the pipeline when the pump stops. When the system is not running, the gas-liquid separator acts as a CO2 reservoir with sufficient volume to hold all the liquid CO2. An auxiliary evaporator on top of the gas-liquid separator prevents excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator functions dually as the NH3 side evaporator and the CO2 side condenser, where compound liquid evaporates and absorbs heat in the tube, while CO2 gas condenses into a liquid in the shell.

2. Advantages of the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
(1) Reduced NH3 Safety Risks:
(1.(1)) The NH3/CO2 cascade system significantly lowers NH3 refrigerant charge condensing pressure to about 1/10 of traditional systems;
(1.(2)) NH3 is restricted to the machine room and equipment room, akin to a 'tiger in a cage', managed by skilled personnel;
(1.(3)) It maximizes the excellent heat transfer properties of NH3 in the high-temperature region to cool CO2.
(2) CO2 serves as the refrigerant in personnel-intensive areas (like single-freezing machines) and warehouses, ensuring maximum safety for personnel and property.
