1. Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously divided into two principal stages: high temperature and low temperature. In the high-temperature stage, ammonia (NH3) serves as the refrigerant, while in the low-temperature stage, carbon dioxide (CO2) takes charge. The high-temperature NH3 evaporates, facilitating the condensation of CO2 discharged from the low-temperature stage. An innovative condensation evaporator interconnects the high and low temperature levels, functioning as both the condenser for the low-temperature cycle and the evaporator for the high-temperature cycle.
Heat from the cold storage is effectively transferred to the CO2 refrigerant through the end evaporator. The absorbed heat by CO2 is then relayed to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. This high-temperature NH3 transfers the heat to the high-temperature condenser, ultimately releasing it to the environment through a cooling medium. Post-condensation, CO2 enters the CO2 reservoir and later traverses the CO2 gas-liquid separator via a dryer filter and throttle valve. Liquid CO2 is propelled to the CO2 evaporator by a CO2 circulation pump. After evaporation, two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, where gaseous CO2 is compressed into the condensing evaporator, seamlessly continuing the refrigeration cycle.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, both the high and low-temperature stages employ single refrigerants. The high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system mirrors a conventional setup, comprising a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttle device. The low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system, aside from the CO2 compressor, includes a condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttle device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a critical role in segregating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This prevents wet strokes in the compressor, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and stores liquid when the pump halts. When used as a CO2 reservoir during non-operation, its volume should accommodate all the CO2 liquid in the system. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator prevents excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. The condensing evaporator in the NH3/CO2 cascade system serves as both an NH3 evaporator and a CO2 condenser, where compound liquid evaporates and absorbs heat, and CO2 gas condenses into liquid.

(1.(3)) This setup fully exploits NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in high-temperature regions to cool CO2.
(2) CO2 as a Safe Medium: CO2, serving as the refrigerant in personnel-dense areas like single-freezing machines and warehouses, ensures the safety of both personnel and property.
