NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is a sophisticated, dual-stage cooling system that brilliantly integrates two temperature levels: high and low. In this innovative setup, NH3 is utilized as the refrigerant at the high-temperature stage, while CO2 is harnessed at the low-temperature stage. The process begins with the evaporation of NH3 in the high-temperature system, which subsequently condenses the CO2 gas released from the low-temperature system. This interconnection is achieved through a condensation evaporator, serving a dual purpose as both the condenser of the low-temperature stage and the evaporator of the high-temperature stage.
 
Within this system, the heat load is seamlessly transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat is then conveyed to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant releases the heat to the high-temperature condenser, which then dissipates it into the environment through a cooling medium. After condensation, CO2 enters the CO2 reservoir and subsequently passes through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. The liquid CO2 is distributed to the CO2 evaporator by the CO2 circulation pump, excluding end cooling devices like single freezers or chillers. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, where the gaseous CO2 is recompressed by the compressor into the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the cycle for continuous refrigeration.

The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system operates with two distinct stages, each employing a single refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system mirrors conventional refrigeration systems, encompassing components such as the refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system, on the other hand, includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
 
The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a critical role in the CO2 compression refrigeration system by effectively separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator. This prevents compressor wet strokes, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and manages liquid return when the pump ceases operation. Should the gas-liquid separator function as a CO2 reservoir when idle, its volume must accommodate all CO2 liquid in the system. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator installed atop the separator ensures CO2 pressure remains controlled post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator simultaneously acts as the NH3 evaporator and the CO2 condenser, facilitating heat absorption and condensation processes.

2. Advantages of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
(1) Enhanced Safety with NH3:
(1.(1)) The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system significantly lowers the condensing pressure of the NH3 refrigerant charge, reducing it to approximately 1/10 of the traditional ammonia refrigeration system's charge.
(1.(2)) NH3 is confined to the machine and equipment rooms, akin to a 'tiger in a cage,' overseen by skilled technicians.
(1.(3)) This system maximizes NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in high-temperature regions to cool CO2.
(2) CO2, as a safer medium, can be utilized in personnel-dense operational areas (such as single-freezing units) and storage facilities, ensuring the safety of both personnel and property.
