1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
NH3/CO2, the cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously divided into two integral parts: the high-temperature and low-temperature stages. In this innovative design, NH3 serves as the refrigerant for the high-temperature stage while CO2 takes on the role at the low-temperature stage. The magic happens when the evaporation of NH3 in the high-temperature system caters to the condensation needs of CO2 gas from the low-temperature level. The condensation evaporator, a marvel of engineering, seamlessly connects both sections, functioning as the condenser for the low temperature and the evaporator for the high temperature.
Through the end evaporator, heat load is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant, which in turn passes the heat to the robust NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. This high-temperature NH3 refrigerant then channels the heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it gracefully into the environment with a cooling medium. Once condensed, the CO2 flows into a dedicated reservoir, moving through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Propelled by the CO2 circulation pump, the liquid smoothly journeys to the CO2 evaporator. Completing this elegant cycle, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, while the gaseous form is compressed back into the condensing evaporator, repeating the cycle for an enduring refrigeration experience.

Each part is a standalone refrigeration system, operating with its unique refrigerant. By separating droplets of CO2 gas from the evaporator, it prevents the compressor from experiencing a wet stroke. It ensures a stable liquid level during pump operation, safeguarding the equipment and pipelines from liquid return when the pump halts. If utilized as a CO2 reservoir during non-operational periods, its capacity must accommodate all CO2 liquid within the system. An auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator is essential to control CO2 pressure spikes post-shutdown. In this advanced NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator doubles as the NH3 evaporator and CO2 condenser, where compound liquid evaporates and heat absorption occurs within the tube, enabling CO2 gas to condense into liquid in the shell.
