1. Ammonia stands out as one of the most cost-effective refrigerants, second only to air and water.
2. It possesses a low standard boiling temperature and operates under moderate pressure in both the condenser and evaporator.
3. Its superior refrigeration capacity per unit volume means it requires less refrigerant circulation for a given cooling capacity. Additionally, it boasts high thermal conductivity and a substantial latent heat of vaporization.
4. With minimal throttling loss, ammonia ensures high operational efficiency.
5. Ammonia operates at low pressures, which translates to reduced mechanical requirements and lower material costs for refrigeration systems.
6. Its pungent odor makes it easily detectable in case of leaks. Ammonia leakage can be identified by its smell, leak test paper, or testing agents. When the air contains 50mg/m3 of ammonia, it becomes distinguishable by the human sense of smell.
7. Ammonia is insoluble in mineral oil, facilitating easy separation from oil at low temperatures. Its lower density than oil allows refrigeration oil to settle below the ammonia liquid, making oil return to the system convenient.
8. It maintains stable thermodynamic and chemical properties at both room and low temperatures.
9. With an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0 and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 0, ammonia is environmentally friendly.

The quantity of ammonia charged in the system is crucial to minimize potential hazards. System design strategies like optimizing the system, utilizing plate heat exchangers and dry shell evaporators, employing nitrogen direct expansion supply, and leveraging NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration cycles can significantly reduce the refrigerant charge. Simplifying large ammonia refrigeration systems with direct expansion supply and lubricating oils compatible with ammonia will further cut down the refrigerant charge due to system simplification.

Employing high-efficiency air coolers reduces ammonia storage in cold rooms. The current global trend in ammonia system development is to minimize ammonia injection while choosing efficient, energy-saving air coolers. High-efficiency, variable pitch stainless steel coil air coolers can function as warehouse evaporators, requiring only 5% of the ammonia charge needed by traditional smooth discharge pipe systems for the same cooling capacity, thus reducing ammonia injection by 95%.
