1. Ammonia is one of the most cost-effective refrigerants, second only to air and water.
2. It features a low standard boiling temperature and moderate pressure in both the condenser and evaporator.
3. High refrigeration capacity per unit volume, requiring less refrigerant circulation per unit cooling capacity. It also boasts high thermal conductivity and a high latent heat of vaporization.
4. Minimal throttling loss and exceptional operating efficiency.
5. Low operating pressure, reducing the requirements for machines and material costs for refrigeration systems.
6. Ammonia has a pungent odor, easily detectable by smell, leak test paper, or test drugs. Human senses can identify it when the air contains just 50mg/m3 of ammonia.
7. Insoluble with mineral oil, it separates easily from oil at low temperatures. Ammonia's lower density than oil allows refrigeration oil to sink below the ammonia liquid, facilitating convenient oil return to the refrigeration system.
8. Exhibits stable thermodynamic and chemical properties at room and low temperatures.
9. Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and Zero Global Warming Potential (GWP).

The amount of ammonia in the system is closely linked to potential danger. To mitigate risks, system designs can optimize components such as plate heat exchangers and dry shell evaporators, utilize nitrogen direct expansion supply, and employ NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration cycles to significantly reduce ammonia volume. Additionally, simplifying large ammonia refrigeration systems using direct expansion supply and lubricating oil compatible with ammonia further decreases the needed ammonia due to system simplification.

Utilizing high-efficiency air coolers minimizes ammonia storage in cold rooms. International trends are leaning towards reducing ammonia injection and selecting energy-efficient air coolers. High-efficiency, variable-pitch stainless steel coil air coolers can serve as warehouse evaporators, using only 5% of the traditional smooth discharge pipe's ammonia injection volume for the same cooling capacity, cutting ammonia usage by 95%.
Ammonia refrigeration system designs should incorporate automatic controls wherever possible to minimize leakage and ensure operator safety.
