1. The Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
NH3/CO2, the cascade refrigeration system consists of two distinct stages: high temperature and low temperature. The high temperature stage utilizes NH3 (Ammonia) as the refrigerant, while the low temperature stage employs CO2. In this system, the NH3 evaporates in the high temperature stage to condense the CO2 gas discharged from the low temperature stage. A condensation evaporator serves to link both stages, functioning as both the condenser of the low temperature stage and the evaporator of the high temperature stage.
The heat load is transferred to the CO2 refrigerant through the end evaporator. The heat absorbed by the CO2 refrigerant is then transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. This high-temperature NH3 refrigerant subsequently transfers the heat to a high-temperature condenser, releasing it into the environment using a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 in the condensing evaporator flows into the CO2 reservoir and then into the CO2 gas-liquid separator through a dryer filter and throttle valve. Liquid CO2 is circulated to the CO2 evaporator by a CO2 circulation pump. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, with gaseous CO2 being compressed back into the condensing evaporator by the compressor. This cycle continues, completing the entire cascade refrigeration process.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the high and low temperature stages operate as independent refrigeration systems, each using a single refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system includes familiar components like a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system, on the other hand, includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator serves a critical role in separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator within the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This prevents compressor wet stroke, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and stores return liquid from end equipment and pipelines when the pump is off. If used as a CO2 reservoir when inactive, the gas-liquid separator must accommodate the entire system's CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator is also mounted atop the gas-liquid separator to prevent excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the condensing evaporator doubles as the NH3 side evaporator and the CO2 side condenser, where compound liquid evaporates to absorb heat and carbon dioxide gas condenses into a liquid.

(1.(3)) The system leverages NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in the high-temperature region to cool CO2 efficiently.
(2) CO2 serves as the refrigerant in personnel-intensive areas like single-freezing machines and warehouses, ensuring the safety of both personnel and property.
