1. Principles of the NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system ingeniously integrates two distinct stages: a high-temperature stage utilizing ammonia (NH3) as the refrigerant and a low-temperature stage employing carbon dioxide (CO2). Through an innovative condensation evaporator, the evaporated NH3 in the high-temperature stage effectively condenses the CO2 gas from the low-temperature stage. This condensation evaporator functions dually as the condenser for the low-temperature stage and the evaporator for the high-temperature stage, thus seamlessly linking both stages.
The system transfers the heat load to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat is then conveyed to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator, which subsequently releases the heat to the environment using a cooling medium. After condensation, CO2 enters the CO2 reservoir, then flows through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. The CO2 circulation pump channels the liquid CO2 to the evaporator. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the separator. The gaseous CO2 is compressed by the compressor and re-enters the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the cascade refrigeration cycle.
In this advanced NH3/CO2 cascade system, each temperature stage operates as an independent refrigeration system using a single refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 system, similar to traditional setups, comprises a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator serves a crucial role by separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, preventing compressor wet strokes. It maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation and stores pipeline liquid return when the pump halts. If used as a CO2 reservoir, its capacity should accommodate all system CO2 liquid. Equipped with an auxiliary evaporator on top, it effectively prevents excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. The NH3/CO2 cascade system's condensing evaporator facilitates dual functionality, ensuring efficient heat absorption and CO2 liquefaction.
