NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration Systems
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system comprises two distinct stages: a high temperature stage using NH3 as the refrigerant and a low temperature stage using CO2. In this sophisticated setup, the evaporation of NH3 in the high-temperature stage is employed to condense the CO2 gas discharged from the low temperature stage. A condensation evaporator ingeniously connects these two stages, functioning as both the condenser for the low temperature stage and the evaporator for the high temperature stage.
 
Heat load is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat is then channeled to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. Subsequently, the NH3 refrigerant releases the heat to the environment via a high-temperature condenser and cooling medium. The condensed CO2 from the condensing evaporator flows into the CO2 reservoir and then through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Liquid CO2 is powered to the CO2 evaporator by a circulation pump. Post-evaporation, two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, where gaseous CO2 is compressed by a compressor into the condensing evaporator. This continuous cycle ensures a seamless cascade refrigeration process.

In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, both high and low temperature stages utilize single refrigerants. The equipment is categorized into two parts: the high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system, which includes a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and a throttling device, resembles conventional systems. On the other hand, the low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system incorporates a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
 
TheCO2gas-liquid separator efficiently segregates CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in the CO2 compression refrigeration system, preventing compressor wet stroke. It maintains liquid level stability during pump operation and stores liquid return from end equipment when the pump halts. When used as a CO2 reservoir during non-operation, its volume should accommodate all system CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator on the gas-liquid separator's top is crucial to avert excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In NH3/CO2 cascade systems, the condensing evaporator serves dual roles: the NH3 side's evaporator and the CO2 side's condenser, effectively managing heat absorption and condensation.

2. Advantages of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration Systems
(1) Reduced NH3 Unsafe Factors:
(1.(1)) The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system significantly lowers the condensing pressure of the NH3 refrigerant charge, reducing it to about one-tenth of that in traditional ammonia systems;
(1.(2)) NH3 is confined to machine and equipment rooms, akin to a 'tiger in a cage,' supervised by skilled technicians;
(1.(3)) Maximizes NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in high-temperature regions, effectively cooling CO2.
(2) CO2, being a safer medium, can be utilized in personnel-intensive areas such as single-freezers and warehouses, safeguarding both personnel and property.
