1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously engineered with two distinct stages: high temperature and low temperature. The high-temperature stage utilizes NH3 as the refrigerant, while the low-temperature stage leverages CO2. During operation, the evaporative cooling of NH3 in the high-temperature stage condenses the CO2 gas expelled from the low-temperature stage. A specialized condensation evaporator seamlessly bridges these two stages, functioning simultaneously as the low-temperature condenser and the high-temperature evaporator.
Heat management within the system is efficiently handled by transferring the heat load to the CO2 refrigerant through the end evaporator. The absorbed heat by CO2 is then conveyed to the NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. Subsequently, this high-temperature NH3 refrigerant releases the heat to the external environment through a high-temperature condenser with a cooling medium. Post-condensation, CO2 is directed to a reservoir and subsequently to a gas-liquid separator via a dryer filter and throttle valve. The liquid CO2 is propelled to the CO2 evaporator using a circulation pump, and after evaporative cooling, the CO2 returns in a two-phase state to the gas-liquid separator. The gaseous CO2 is then compressed back into the condensing evaporator, repeating the cycle for a sustained refrigeration process.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the distinct high and low temperature levels are each dedicated to a single refrigerant system. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional setups with a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttle device. Conversely, the low-temperature CO2 system includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttle device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator is pivotal for removing CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, thereby preventing compressor wet strokes. It stabilizes liquid levels during pump operation and retains liquid in the system when the pump halts. Additionally, its design allows it to function as a CO2 reservoir, capable of holding the entire system's CO2 liquid volume. An auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator mitigates excessive CO2 pressure upon shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator dual-functions as the NH3 side evaporator and the CO2 side condenser, facilitating efficient heat absorption and condensation.

(1.(3)) Optimal use of NH3's superior heat transfer properties in the high-temperature zone to cool CO2.
(2) CO2 as a refrigerant ensures safety within personnel-intensive areas (e.g., single-freezing machines and warehouses), safeguarding both staff and assets.
