1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously divided into two distinct parts: the high-temperature stage, which utilizes NH3 as the refrigerant, and the low-temperature stage, which employs CO2. In this harmonious blend, the cooling marvel of NH3 in the high temperature system effectively condenses the CO2 refrigerant gas emitted from the low temperature system. A sophisticated condensation evaporator acts as a vital link, serving as both the condenser for the low-temperature level and the evaporator for the high-temperature level, ensuring seamless thermal exchange.
In this sophisticated cascade, the heat load is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The CO2 refrigerant, absorbing this heat, passes it onto the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. This high-temperature NH3 refrigerant then skillfully releases the heat to the ambient environment via a high-temperature condenser, using a cooling medium. The journey continues as condensed CO2 in the condensing evaporator is stored in a CO2 reservoir, subsequently moving to the CO2 gas-liquid separator after passing through a dryer filter and throttle valve. Liquid CO2 embarks on its journey to the CO2 evaporator, propelled by the CO2 circulation pump (absent of end cooling devices like a single freezer or chiller). Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 elegantly returns to the gas-liquid separator, with gaseous CO2 being drawn by the compressor to be compressed into the condensing evaporator, repeating this cycle to complete the entire cascade refrigeration process.
Within the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the high and low temperature levels each operate as individual refrigerant systems. The high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system mirrors a conventional setup, featuring not only a refrigeration compressor but also a condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system comprises a CO2 compressor, alongside essential components such as condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator artfully separates the CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator within the CO2 compression refrigeration system, preventing compressor wet strokes and maintaining a stable liquid level during pump operation. It also serves as a reservoir to store equipment and pipeline liquid return when the pump halts. If utilized as a CO2 reservoir when idle, it must accommodate the entire CO2 liquid volume in the system. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator should be positioned atop the gas-liquid separator to prevent excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator doubles as the NH3 side evaporator and CO2 side condenser, with compound liquid evaporating and absorbing heat in the tube as CO2 gas condenses into liquid in the shell.

(1.(3)) This system fully leverages NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in the high-temperature region to efficiently cool CO2.
(2) Utilizing CO2 as a medium within personnel-dense operational areas (such as single-freezing machines) and warehouses ensures enhanced safety for both personnel and property.
