1. NH3/CO2: The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously designed with two distinct stages: the high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 as the refrigerant, and the low-temperature stage employing CO2. The high-temperature NH3 system condenses CO2 gas from the low-temperature stage via an advanced condensation evaporator, which serves as both the condenser for the CO2 and the evaporator for the NH3. This unified design ensures efficient heat transfer and seamless operation across temperature levels.
In this system, heat absorbed by the CO2 refrigerant at the end evaporator is efficiently transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensation evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant then releases the heat to the external environment via a high-temperature condenser and cooling medium. The condensed CO2 moves into a CO2 reservoir and then a gas-liquid separator after passing through a dryer filter and throttle valve. Liquid CO2 is pumped to the CO2 evaporator, where it returns as two-phase CO2 and is compressed by the compressor, repeating the cycle for a continuous cascade refrigeration process.
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system leverages separate single refrigerant systems for both high and low temperature levels. The high-temperature NH3 system, similar to conventional setups, includes a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system encompasses a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator is crucial for efficiently separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator within the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This component prevents compressor wet strokes, maintains stable liquid levels during pump operation, and stores end equipment and pipeline liquid returns when the pump stops. When used as a CO2 reservoir during non-operation periods, its volume must accommodate all system CO2 liquid. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator is installed to prevent excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. The NH3/CO2 condensing evaporator functions dually as the NH3 side evaporator and CO2 side condenser, facilitating effective heat absorption and CO2 condensation.

(1.(3)) Optimal use of NH3's superior heat transfer properties in high-temperature regions to effectively cool CO2.
(2) Utilizing CO2 as a Refrigerant: CO2 can safely enter personnel-dense operational areas and storage facilities, ensuring the safety of both personnel and property.
