1. Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously designed in two stages: high-temperature and low-temperature. The high-temperature stage employs NH3 as the refrigerant, while the low-temperature stage utilizes CO2. In this innovative system, the evaporation of NH3 in the high-temperature stage efficiently condenses the CO2 gas discharged from the low-temperature stage. A condensation evaporator seamlessly links the two parts, functioning as the condenser for the low-temperature stage and the evaporator for the high-temperature stage.
In this state-of-the-art setup, the heat load is transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat by CO2 is then channeled to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. Subsequently, the high-temperature NH3 transfers the heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it into the environment via a cooling medium. The condensed CO2 enters the CO2 reservoir, then progresses through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. The liquid CO2 is propelled to the evaporator by the CO2 circulation pump. After the evaporator, two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, where the gaseous CO2 is compressed by the compressor and re-enters the condensing evaporator, perpetuating the cycle to complete the cascade refrigeration process.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the high and low-temperature stages operate as independent refrigeration systems using single refrigerants. The high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system mirrors conventional systems, comprising a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 refrigeration system, apart from the CO2 compressor, includes a condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a crucial role in the CO2 compression refrigeration system. It separates CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, preventing compressor wet stroke, maintaining stable liquid levels during pump operation, and storing return liquid when the pump is idle. If used as a CO2 reservoir when idle, its volume must accommodate all CO2 liquid in the system. An auxiliary evaporator is fitted on top to prevent high-pressure issues post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator serves dual purposes: evaporator on the NH3 side and condenser on the CO2 side, where the compound liquid evaporates, absorbing heat, while CO2 gas condenses into liquid.
