NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
1. NH3/CO2 - The Principle of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system operates with two distinct stages: high temperature and low temperature. The high temperature stage utilizes NH3 as the refrigerant, while CO2 is used in the low temperature stage. The evaporative cooling of NH3 in the high temperature level condenses the CO2 gas from the low temperature level. A condensation evaporator mediates between the two, functioning as both the condenser for the low temperature level and the evaporator for the high temperature level.
 
Heat is transferred through the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. This heat is then passed from the CO2 to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The high-temperature NH3 refrigerant dissipates the heat to the environment via a high-temperature condenser and cooling medium. Condensed CO2 in the evaporator moves to the CO2 reservoir, then through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. The CO2 is pumped to the CO2 evaporator and cycles back, maintaining the cascade refrigeration cycle.

In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the high and low temperature levels operate as separate refrigeration systems, each using a single refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 system comprises conventional components like a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
 
The CO2 gas-liquid separator effectively separates CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in the compression refrigeration system to prevent compressor wet stroke and ensure stable liquid levels during pump operation. It also stores returning liquid from equipment and pipelines when the pump is off. When used as a CO2 reservoir, it should hold all system CO2 liquid and include an auxiliary evaporator to manage CO2 pressure after shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator acts as both the NH3 side evaporator and CO2 side condenser, facilitating heat exchange and CO2 condensation.

2. Advantages of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
(1) Minimized NH3 Safety Risks:
(1.(1)) The NH3/CO2 system significantly lowers NH3 charge condensing pressure to about 1/10th of traditional ammonia systems.
(1.(2)) NH3 is confined to machine rooms and equipment rooms, akin to a 'tiger in a cage,' monitored by experts.
(1.(3)) The system maximizes NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in high-temperature regions to cool CO2.
(2) CO2 can be safely introduced into personnel-dense areas (like single-freezing machines and warehouses), ensuring safety for people and assets.
