1. NH3/CO2: The Ingenious Principle of Cascade Refrigeration
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is a pioneering technology that uniquely combines two stages: a high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 (Ammonia) and a low-temperature stage employing CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) as refrigerants. In this sophisticated system, NH3 acts as the refrigerant in the high-temperature stage, facilitating the condensation of CO2 refrigerant gas emitted from the low-temperature stage. An integrated condensation evaporator bridges these two stages, serving as a dual-purpose component—acting simultaneously as the condenser for the low-temperature level and the evaporator for the high-temperature level.
In this ingenious setup, the heat load collected by the end evaporator is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant. The heat absorbed by CO2 is then passed on to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. Subsequently, the NH3 refrigerant releases this heat to the environment using a cooling medium in the high-temperature condenser. The CO2, now condensed within the evaporator, proceeds to the CO2 reservoir, advancing through the dryer filter and throttle valve to the gas-liquid separator. From there, liquid CO2 is propelled by a circulation pump to the CO2 evaporator (absent any end cooling devices such as a freezer or chiller). Post evaporation, the two-phase CO2 is returned to the gas-liquid separator, where gaseous CO2 is drawn by a compressor and compressed into the condensing evaporator. This seamless process repeats to complete the entire cycle of the cascade refrigeration system.
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is divided into two distinct refrigeration systems, each utilizing a single refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional setups, featuring a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, collectively working in harmony to maintain optimal cooling performance.
The A CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a crucial role in separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator within the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This ensures the prevention of wet strokes in the compressor, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and accommodates end equipment and pipeline liquid return when the pump is inactive. When the system is not operational, this separator also acts as a CO2 reservoir, holding all system CO2 liquid within its capacity. Moreover, an auxiliary evaporator is strategically placed atop the gas-liquid separator to effectively prevent excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator serves a dual function—as the NH3-side evaporator and CO2-side condenser—where compound liquid evaporates to absorb heat in the tube, simultaneously condensing carbon dioxide gas into liquid within the shell.
