1. The Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system ingeniously integrates two distinct cooling stages: a high temperature stage and a low temperature stage. In this sophisticated setup, NH3 serves as the refrigerant at the high temperature level, while CO2 takes the role at the low temperature level. The process unfolds as NH3 evaporates within the high temperature system, skillfully condensing the CO2 refrigerant gas from the low temperature system. The magic happens at the condensation evaporator, a pivotal component bridging the two systems. This dual-purpose device functions as the condenser for the low temperature level and the evaporator for the high temperature level, seamlessly facilitating the refrigeration process.
Within this advanced system, the heat load is adeptly transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat is then channeled to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. With finesse, the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant transfers the heat to the high-temperature condenser, eventually releasing it to the environment through a cooling medium. As a result, condensed CO2 from the condensing evaporator flows into the CO2 reservoir before entering the CO2 gas-liquid separator through a dryer filter and throttle valve. The liquid CO2 is pumped to the CO2 evaporator, commencing its journey through the system. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, where the gaseous CO2 is drawn by the compressor and compressed once again into the condensing evaporator. This ingenious cycle perpetuates the cascade refrigeration process.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, each temperature level functions as a standalone refrigeration system using a single refrigerant. The system's structure is divided into two comprehensive segments: the high-temperature NH3 refrigeration system mirrors the conventional setup, equipped with a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low temperature CO2 refrigeration system includes a CO2 compressor alongside a condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel. Together, these components create a seamless and efficient cooling operation.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a crucial role in the CO2 compression refrigeration system by efficiently separating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, preventing wet strokes in the compressor, and maintaining a stable liquid level during pump operation. When the pump halts, it adeptly stores equipment and pipeline liquid return. If utilized as a CO2 reservoir when inactive, its volume is designed to accommodate the entire system's CO2 liquid. Additionally, an auxiliary evaporator atop the gas-liquid separator ensures that CO2 pressure remains optimal post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the condensing evaporator serves as a dual-function marvel—acting both as the NH3 side evaporator and the CO2 side condenser, where compound liquid evaporates and absorbs heat inside the tube, while carbon dioxide gas is efficiently condensed into liquid within the shell.

(1.(1)) The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system dramatically minimizes the condensing pressure of the NH3 refrigerant, using merely about 1/10 of the charge required by traditional ammonia refrigeration systems.
(1.(2)) NH3 is safely confined to the machine room or equipment room, akin to a 'tiger' securely enclosed within a 'cage', with vigilant oversight by skilled professionals.
(1.(3)) This system maximizes the excellent heat transfer properties of NH3, particularly in the high-temperature region, for effectively cooling CO2.
(2) CO2, as a refrigerant medium, is strategically introduced into personnel-intensive operation rooms, such as single-freezing machines and warehouse spaces, ensuring the utmost safety of both personnel and property.
