1. Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously crafted into two segments: the high-temperature and low-temperature stages. Here, NH3 operates as the refrigerant in the high-temperature domain, while CO2 takes charge in the low-temperature realm. The high-temperature level employs NH3 evaporation to facilitate the condensation of CO2 refrigerant gas, which is expelled from the low-temperature stage. This seamless transition is achieved through a dual-function condensation evaporator, serving as the condenser for the low-temperature level and as an evaporator for the high-temperature level.
In this sophisticated system, the CO2 refrigerant absorbs heat via an end evaporator, which is then efficiently transferred to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant releases this heat to the environment via a high-temperature condenser, aided by a cooling medium. Once condensed, CO2 enters a reservoir, proceeds through a dryer filter and throttle valve, reaching the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Here, liquid CO2 is propelled by a circulation pump to the CO2 evaporator—absent of end cooling devices like single freezers or chillers. Post-evaporation, CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator in a two-phase state, with gaseous CO2 drawn by the compressor, compressed back into the condensing evaporator. This cyclical process perpetuates the cascade refrigeration cycle.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the refrigeration mechanism is distinctly divided into two single-refrigerant stages: the high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional refrigeration, encompassing a compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. Meanwhile, the low-temperature CO2 system includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and an expansion vessel, collectively forming a robust and efficient cooling system.
The CO2 Gas-Liquid Separator serves a critical role in the CO2 compression refrigeration system by efficiently separating droplet-laden CO2 gas from the evaporator. This process prevents undesirable compressor wet strokes, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and ensures safe liquid return storage when the pump halts. If employed as a CO2 reservoir during inactive states, the separator's volume must accommodate all system CO2 liquid. Moreover, an auxiliary evaporator atop the separator averts excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator performs dual functions: evaporating NH3 while condensing CO2 gas into liquid, all within an intricately designed shell.
