NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
1. NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System Principles
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is ingeniously designed with two stages: high-temperature and low-temperature. In this system, NH3 is utilized in the high-temperature stage and CO2 in the low-temperature stage. The NH3 refrigerant evaporates in the high-temperature level system, effectively condensing the CO2 refrigerant gas from the low-temperature level. A condensation evaporator seamlessly connects the two stages, serving a dual purpose as both the condenser for CO2 and the evaporator for NH3.
 
Heat is transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. This absorbed heat is then transferred from the CO2 refrigerant to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant subsequently releases the heat to the environment through a high-temperature condenser. The condensed CO2, now liquid, moves to the CO2 reservoir and then to the gas-liquid separator via a dryer filter and throttle valve. The liquid CO2 is circulated to the evaporator by a circulation pump. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the gas-liquid separator, where the gaseous CO2 is compressed by the compressor and re-enters the condensing evaporator, thus completing the cycle.

In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the high and low-temperature stages are single refrigerant systems. The high-temperature NH3 system includes a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system comprises a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
 
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator efficiently separates CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator, preventing compressor wet stroke. It maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation and stores the liquid return when the pump is off. When used as a reservoir, it must hold all system CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator atop the separator prevents excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator acts as both the NH3 evaporator and the CO2 condenser, with the compound liquid evaporating and absorbing heat within the tube, while CO2 gas condenses into liquid in the shell.

2. Advantages of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
(1) Enhanced NH3 Safety Factors:
(1.1) The system drastically reduces NH3 condensing pressure to about 1/10th of traditional ammonia systems.
(1.2) NH3 is confined to machine and equipment rooms, akin to a 'tiger in a cage,' monitored by professional technicians.
(1.3) It leverages NH3's excellent heat transfer properties in the high-temperature region to cool CO2.
(2) CO2 can be safely introduced into personnel-intensive areas (like single-freezing machines and warehouses), ensuring the safety of personnel and property.
