1. NH3/CO2: The Principles of Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system ingeniously integrates two stages: high temperature and low temperature. The high-temperature stage utilizes NH3 as the refrigerant, while the low-temperature stage employs CO2. Within this system, the evaporation of NH3 in the high-temperature stage is harnessed to condense the CO2 refrigerant from the low-temperature stage. A condensation evaporator effectively links these two stages, serving as the low-temperature condenser and high-temperature evaporator.
Heat load is efficiently transferred to the CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. The absorbed heat by CO2 is then relayed to the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant subsequently transfers this heat to the high-temperature condenser, releasing it into the environment through a cooling medium. Condensed CO2 enters a reservoir, and passes through a dryer filter and throttle valve into the CO2 gas-liquid separator. Liquid CO2 is circulated to the CO2 evaporator by a CO2 pump. Post-evaporation, the two-phase CO2 returns to the separator, where gaseous CO2 is compressed back into the condensing evaporator by the compressor, completing the cascade refrigeration cycle.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, the high and low-temperature stages operate as independent refrigeration systems using single refrigerants. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional systems, comprising a refrigeration compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttling device. The low-temperature CO2 system includes a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, gas-liquid separator, filter dryer, pump, throttling device, evaporator, and expansion vessel.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator plays a vital role in isolating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This prevents compressor wet strokes, maintains a stable liquid level during pump operation, and stores end equipment and pipeline liquid return when the pump stops. If used as a CO2 reservoir when idle, its volume should accommodate all system CO2 liquid. An auxiliary evaporator on top of the separator helps prevent excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. In the NH3/CO2 cascade setup, the condensing evaporator functions as both the NH3 side evaporator and CO2 side condenser, facilitating heat absorption and CO2 condensation.
