1. The Principle of NH3/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System
The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system features a dual-stage configuration: a high-temperature stage utilizing NH3 as the refrigerant and a low-temperature stage employing CO2. The innovation lies in the use of evaporating NH3 in the high-temperature stage to condense CO2 gas discharged from the low-temperature stage. This synergy is achieved through a condensation evaporator, ingeniously serving as both the low-temperature stage condenser and the high-temperature stage evaporator.
In this elegant system, heat load transitions to CO2 refrigerant via the end evaporator. CO2 refrigerant then transfers the absorbed heat to high-temperature NH3 refrigerant through the condensing evaporator. Subsequently, the NH3 refrigerant releases the heat into the environment via the high-temperature condenser. The CO2, now condensed in the evaporator, proceeds to the CO2 reservoir, and then advances to the gas-liquid separator via a dryer filter and throttle valve. Liquid CO2 is pumped into the CO2 evaporator, completing a transformative cycle as the two-phase CO2 returns to the separator. Gaseous CO2 is compressed back into the condensing evaporator, perpetuating an efficient cascade refrigeration cycle.
In the NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system, each temperature level operates as an independent refrigeration system with a singular refrigerant. The high-temperature NH3 system mirrors conventional systems, equipped with a compressor, condenser, liquid storage, gas-liquid separator, and throttle device. Conversely, the low-temperature CO2 system incorporates a CO2 compressor, condensing evaporator, reservoir, separator, filter dryer, pump, throttle device, evaporator, and expansion vessel, achieving a harmonious blend of functionality and efficiency.
The The CO2 gas-liquid separator is pivotal in isolating CO2 gas droplets from the evaporator in the CO2 compression refrigeration system. This separation is crucial to prevent a wet stroke in the compressor, maintain a stable liquid level during pump operation, and accommodate liquid return during pump shutdown. If employed as a reservoir when inactive, its capacity must suffice to contain the entire CO2 liquid volume. An auxiliary evaporator atop the separator averts excessive CO2 pressure post-shutdown. Within the NH3/CO2 cascade system, the condensing evaporator plays a dual role, functioning as the NH3 side evaporator and the CO2 side condenser, in which compound liquid evaporates, absorbing heat inside the tube, while CO2 gas condenses into liquid within the shell.
