The NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system is a marvel of engineering, ingeniously divided into two stages: high and low temperature. In this sophisticated setup, ammonia (NH3) serves as the refrigerant for the high-temperature stage, while carbon dioxide (CO2) takes on the role in the low-temperature stage. The brilliance lies in the evaporation process of NH3, which efficiently condenses the CO2 refrigerant gas from the low-temperature level. A pivotal condensation evaporator seamlessly connects these stages, functioning both as a condenser for the low temperature and an evaporator for the high temperature.
In this innovative system, the end evaporator facilitates heat transfer to the CO2 refrigerant, which then passes it onto the high-temperature NH3 refrigerant via the condensing evaporator. The NH3 refrigerant, now high in temperature, further dissipates this heat into the environment through a high-temperature condenser and cooling medium. As CO2 condenses in the evaporator, it enters the CO2 reservoir, moving through a dryer filter and throttle valve to reach the gas-liquid separator. Liquid CO2 circulates to the evaporator via a pump, initializing a cycle without an end cooling device, such as a standalone freezer or chiller. After passing through the evaporator, two-phase CO2 returns to its separator, where gaseous CO2 is compressed back into the evaporator, perpetuating this efficient cascade refrigeration cycle.

In this cascade system, the condensing evaporator is dual-functional, acting as both the NH3-side evaporator and CO2-side condenser, where the compound liquid evaporates to absorb heat, efficiently condensing CO2 gas into a liquid.
